The Feeling of Boredom and Its Way of Functioning

Written by Bedirhan Atabay

In a usual routine, people tend to feel bored and try to get out of their boring situation. No matter how good of a situation a person is in, he can never escape the feeling of being bored. Even when you are having so much fun, you can still be bored, and this does not seem logical in the first place, and can ask questions to yourself like:

"Why am I still bored? I have lots of good things to do!"

Actually, if analyzed from a neuroscientific perspective, it can be seen that this feeling is totally normal even when there is no reason on the surface. There are always reasons beneath the way our brain functions for something to happen, and in this proper case, the first reason behind this is the monotony of an event.

No matter how amazing your lifestyle is, if you tend to feel bored, this means that you are doing pretty similar things each day and not making a major change (1). Imagine that you are a multimillionaire, and you always do the same things:

  • Waking up

  • Checking your company

  • Attending several meetings

  • Taking a walk

  • Watching a movie

  • Sleeping

If you tend to follow the same program for a while, you will feel bored for a high likelihood, and eventually desperately try to find a way to make a change and solve your boredom issue.

The second reason is the difficulty of the tasks that you need to fulfill (1). If you have a difficult task that you are capable of doing, then you can feel motivated and keep continuously working to fulfill the task with the highest performance, and without having a major boredom issue. However, if you have a task that is extremely easy to do, it will be more logical to expect to have a boring moment. The higher the challenge is for you, the more motivated and less bored you become.

There are some other reasons that give you a higher possibility to feel bored as well. If you are an extroverted person, you have a higher chance to feel bored due to your nature which requires an extensive attitude from others and the lack of adrenaline you will have when alone or have nothing to do (1). Another reason is the great requirement for novelty by some people (1). The people in this category tend to be people that are having fun while doing things that might seem dangerous and scary for some people, such as when they are bungee jumping or skydiving (1). Due to the slower pace of life for this type of people, they tend to be bored more in such simple situations or need of particularly more simple and less interesting tasks.

Even if you feel bored in a large course of life, you need to understand that your situation is not exclusive to you and you are not the only person with this issue. Also, you still have various things to do to get rid of your boring situation, such as finding an alternative activity that you can have fun while doing, like playing an instrument, trying origami, and playing a board game that you have never played before (2). Another thing to do when you do not have enough time to expand your Funtime palette as I suggested is to give routine tasks a unique side and make them less boring, such as using a new way to fulfill a job or trying a new app (3). Even if you feel bored in some cases, remember to feel motivated, and not feel inactive by any means.
